VCs and ^D fun at login:

Following a post on l-k about ^D fun at login:. I just tried this now, all
consoles are now DEAD apart from 2 consoles which are currently logged in
by myself, in order to write this email. All of these consoles have a
message 'INIT: Id "c3[456]" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes".

I just noticed all the agetty processes on these particular consoles are
gone - a quick ps shows this.

PID TTY STAT TIME COMMAND
1 ? S 0:03 init
2 ? SW 0:00 (kflushd)
3 ? SWN 0:00 (kswapd)
9 ? S 0:00 /sbin/update
49 ? S 0:00 /usr/sbin/syslogd
50 ? S 0:00 /usr/sbin/klogd
52 ? S 0:00 /usr/sbin/inetd
54 ? S 0:00 /usr/sbin/crond -l10
63 ? S 0:00 gpm -t ps2
65 2 S 0:00 -csh
289 2 R 0:00 ps ax
64 1 S 0:00 -csh
286 1 S 0:01 pine

Whoops, look, no agetties. :o) Problem? Hmm, this is interesting. I wonder
if I can dial my Linux-based ISP up and press ^D just to kill off that
particular session and deny access. :/

Huh. I spaketh too soon. They're BACK!! So much for that DoS idea. :o)

Anyway, upshot is, couldn't find any sight or sound or sign of a panic
anywhere as that guy originally mentioned with his i486. Maybe I'll
resurrect my i486 and seek to reproduce it. (Don't forget to go watch
StarTrek: Insurrection BTW. Supposed to rock!)

Cheers,
Alex.
