I have almost the same configuration. My mainboard is an EPOX EP-51
MVP3E-M (the same as NMC 5VMMX) also using the VIA Apollo MVP3
chipset. I have used kernels 2.1.129 (with and without APM 1.7 patch)
and kernel 2.1.125.

Exactly the same for me. I also did try all this, and, of course,
under Windows power-off works.

OK, I repeat myself, for me this is also the same error message. The
registers show the same values...
I use a recent Epox BIOS (from 10/30/98).
Does anybody have an idea what I should try next?
