I want to thank the several hundred people who suggested that I try 'make
bzImage'. Having done that prior to submitting the this list, but not making
the point clear in my original message made me imminently aware of how
willing people are to help out on this list.

The problem, I finally discovered, was that the version of syslinux.exe that
I was using, was too old and did not support the use of bzImages to boot
from. Once I got myself an updated version of it, no problems.
