True enough. Disks will last longer and waste less energy if kept
spinning. A motor draws much more current when starting than it does in
normal operation. If you spin it up more than a couple of times an hour,
you are probably wasting energy, better to leave it spinning. If the disk
is only accessed a few times/day then you can probably let it spin down at
the expense of the bearings which will probably not live long (lubricant
stiffens up after sitting and cooling off).

Besides, it probably takes more energy to manufacture and ship a new disk
than the drive will ever use in its life anyway.
