Take a look at the /dev/vcsa devices. Simple example:

echo "....abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz" > /dev/vcsa0

Further examples can be found in _Linux Application Development_.

ps: Curses, Slang, or some variant thereof is the right way to do it.
