egcs 1.1 is known to miscompile on alpha. Please try egcs 1.1.1. It is
just released yesterday. It may be hard to ftp it. I put a diff at

ftp://ftp.yggdrasil.com/private/hjl/egcs-1.1b-1.1.1.diff.gz

Please give it a try.
