if you are talking about 2.1, then it's already there in 2.1.131:

#define VMALLOC_RESERVE (64 << 20) /* 64MB for vmalloc */
#define MAXMEM ((unsigned long)(-PAGE_OFFSET-VMALLOC_RESERVE))

if (memory_end > MAXMEM)
memory_end = MAXMEM;

there should be a warning that we have clipped memory though:
