It comes from the very early days of the kernel. As I recall, it was
added to improve the testing of device drivers, or something of that
nature. But my memory is a bit fuzzy back in that timeframe (ca. four
to eight years ago), so I could be mis-remembering....

At least it is the right time of year for nostalgia, eh?
