engle@orc:~:[1372]$ cat /etc/conf.modules
alias eth0 tulip
alias net-pf-3 off # ax25
alias net-pf-4 off # ipx
#alias net-pf-5 ... # appletalk
alias ppp-compress-21 bsd_comp
alias ppp-compress-24 ppp_deflate
alias ppp-compress-26 ppp_deflate

The last three lines will make things happy. Be sure that you have
the bsd_comp.o and ppp_defalate.o modules compiled and in your
current /lib/modules/x.x.x/net directory.
