2.2.0-final and /dev/stdout and pipes

2.2.0-pre6 and 2.0.36:
$ echo hi > /dev/stdout | wc -l
1

2.2.0-final:
$ echo hi > /dev/stdout | wc -l
bash: /dev/stdout: No such file or directory
$ echo hi > /dev/stdout
hi
$ ls -la /dev/stdout
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 17 Wed Sep 16 05:04:02 1998
/dev/stdout -> ../proc/self/fd/1

I've got egcs-1.1.1, Cyrix 6x86, RH5.0. I didn't change
my config between 2.2.0-pre6 and -final.
