ide-tape problems (2.0.0pre7)

I'm having some problems with the IDE tape driver. I've got an HP Colo 8
GB, I'm running 2.0.0pre7 at the moment. (You may have noticed the WineHQ
disk failure and concomitant recovery problems a couple of weeks ago.
Well, it's IDE tape related.)

Last night's tar czf /dev/ht0 ... failed with "error waiting for process
to exit: child process lost (is SIGCHLD ignored or trapped?)". The
following messages appeared in syslog:

Here are the IDE boot messages. There are no other IDE devices other than
the tape.

I tried to reproduce the problem a few minutes ago, and there were a
number of "nr_stages should be 0" messages before the kernel bit the dust
(NULL pointer derefence I think) and lost the previous version of this
email.

Should I give up on IDE-tape and just use scsi emulation? Advice
appreciated.
