Any hope for *controller* based PCI modem??

I probably just recently made a mistake and bought a MultiTech
MT5634ZPX-PCI modem thinking that hey "MultiTech modems are great;
I've never had a problem with them before."

But I can't seem to get it to be recognized or usable under linux
(kernel v2.2.1ac5)

cat /proc/pci yields this info...

PCI devices found:
Bus 0, device 11, function 0:
Communication controller: Lucent (ex-AT&T) Microelectronics Unknown
device (rev 0).
Vendor id=11c1. Device id=480.
Medium devsel. Fast back-to-back capable. IRQ 10. Master Capable.
No bursts. Min Gnt=252.Max Lat=14.
Non-prefetchable 32 bit memory at 0xe4101000 [0xe4101000].
I/O at 0x6800 [0x6801].
I/O at 0x6c00 [0x6c01].
I/O at 0x7000 [0x7001].

Now I already *KNOW* that "winmodems" and other controller-less
modems will not work and I total agree with all the arguments that pretty
much state that these modems are junk (under any operating system) and
there shouldn't be any effort made to provide support for them under
Linux.

However the MultiTech MT5634ZPX-PCI is *NOT*, to the best of my knowledge
a winmodem or "soft" modem. There is even gobs and gobs of statements
and marketing propaganda on the packaging that states "Built-in processor
does the work so your PC doesn't have to" and such things.

Minimum system requirements state: IBM compatible PC with an available
PC slot.

when installed in a windows98 (ugh) box the properties dialogs for this
modem states that it is using IRQ 9 and COM5. As you can tell, under
my linux box the PCI scan reports IRQ 10 instead but that is understandable
since my hardware is different. But the resources are still the same.

Anybody have suggestions on how to get this modem working under linux?

Thanks,

Jeff Wiegley
