ncr53c860? problem with latest kernels

I am seeing the following:

After this system is dead, have to hit sysrq B.

I have seen this with vanilla 2.2.2, 2.2.1-ac5 , 2.2.2-ac1 and 2.1.132

Reverting to 2.0.36 all is fine.

I don't thing this is necessarily a SCSI problem as it happens during
backup to an IDE tape device when SMBFS filesystems are being accessed.

I suspect that SMBFS is trampling on something.
