2.2.2-ac7 timer interrupt stops

I've had a couple of crashes with 2.2.2-ac7 (which happens to be the kernel
I'm running). The crashes are due to the sudden lack of a timer interrupt.
The symptoms are what you'd expect: time doesn't get updated, tasks don't
get scheduled unless a network or keyboard interrupt occurs, nothing gets
flushed to disk properly, etc. etc. Eventually something else goes wrong
(or maybe more of the same) and a few minutes or hours or days later the
system really hangs. The software watchdog seems to be based on the timer
interrupt and doesn't reboot, of course. Alt-SysRq-U and Alt-SysRq-S don't
finish syncing properly.

I don't know if previous crashes with similar symptoms on earlier kernel
revisions (2.2.2) are due to the same bug. I thought the machine was hung
when I couldn't ssh to it or switch consoles, but just before I was going
to reset it the hard disk blinked for a few accesses.

The motherboard is an Asus P2B 350-U, with a PII-300.

The GUS is playing mp3's. This works for the rest of the current song,
then the scheduler doesn't get called to play the next one. The BTTV
module is loaded but not active; neither is the smc-ultra (which wasn't
there yesterday; when it crashed this morning I used the windfall downtime
to put the card in). The knfsd is serving a diskless Multia.
