You should also try the latest knfsd. There are a bunch of bug fixes in it.

Does this machine run out of memory when it dies? Linux doesn't like it much
when you run out of swap.

Try compiling a UP kernel for the PII box, and see if it dies the same way then.

Hope one or more of these helps. These are really all just guesses, but should
help.
