Query: VIA chipset trouble , was booting the problem area ?

Hello All , I have a small problem with boot either RH-6.0
or Caldera-2.2 on an Epox MB (ep-58mvp3c-m 100mhz) with Via
chipset . The cdrom -will- boot (see below for HW config)
but when the system attempts to load the kernel it locks .
Under Caldera I get 'Loading kernel ._'
" Redhat I get 'Spewed binary garbage'
then both do -complete- lock 'reset' is the only cure . Tia, JimL
