Mounting rw is slower than ro?

I've been wondering about this for a while now.

Why is it that mounting a 5Gig partition read-only
is instanteous, but mounting read-write take
forever (well, a while anyway)

Please CC any replies... The HTTP Archive is a
bit unreliable :)
