All of my editors will magically know that files in one part of the
filesystem tree are CRLF files and in another part are not?

I won't doubt you if you say you've had problems. I never have.

If you're saying that the extension table shouldn't be compiled in, I can
agree. It should be poked in via sysctl(). End of maintenance headache.

If you didn't want DOS filesystem semantics, why'd you compile it in in
the first place? Configure it out, or don't load the module.
