I was getting stuff like
/dev/audio: Unable to allocate memory.

Something to do with DMA. Anyway, there's a DMA memory patch on ALSA's site
(http://www.alsa-project.org IIRC) that seems to have done the trick for me.

I'm using ALSA 0.3.0pre3; 0.3.2 refused to run correctly, unresolved
module symbols..... But that's another story.
