DSTAT=0xc0=0x80+0x40
Bit 0x80 is a pure status bit (DMA FIFO empty)
Bit 0x40 means Master Data Parity Error.

The chip is telling you that it detected a data parity error on the PCI
BUS (not the SCSI BUS) when acting as a PCI master. In my opinion, such an
error should not be tried to be recovered, but the system should just be
stopped.

You just should not miss the single bit that made the whole sense. :-)

Nothing bad here.

The '2 drivers instead of one' approach happens to be explained in the
README.ncr53c8xx file. The sym53c8xx is optimized for the 896 and 895A.

The driver just displays a hardware error condition reported by the chip.

If you are courageous, you may try to disable master parity checking and
see what happens (driver option 'mpar:n'). But donnot consider you have
been advised to do so.:)
