I think you got the answer for Trio 32/64, for other cards:
For S3 ViRGE cards you have to take the KGICON framebuffer
(www.ggi-project.org)
For the S3 Savage4, a Linux framebuffer driver was under development at
Creative Labs. Never saw the final product, but I got no Savage :)
