I was just about to post something similar... I get the problem on 2.0.37
as well as 2.2.x on a UDMA drive that is being used without UDMA turned
on. I've pasted relevant information below, let me know if anything else
will be of use.

IDE interface: Intel 82371SB PIIX3 IDE (rev 0).
Medium devsel. Fast back-to-back capable. Master Capable. Latency=32.
I/O at 0xf000 [0xf001].

PIIX3: IDE controller on PCI bus 00 dev 39
PIIX3: not 100% native mode: will probe irqs later
ide0: BM-DMA at 0xf000-0xf007, BIOS settings: hda:pio, hdb:pio
hda: SAMSUNG WN312021A (1.2 GB), ATA DISK drive
ide0 at 0x1f0-0x1f7,0x3f6 on irq 14
hda: SAMSUNG WN312021A (1.2 GB), 1151MB w/109kB Cache, CHS=585/64/63, DMA

This message repeats itself at various times, with no noticeable problems:

hda: dma_intr: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error }
hda: dma_intr: error=0x40 { UncorrectableError }, LBAsect=51373,
sector=51278
end_request: I/O error, dev 03:01 (hda), sector 51278
