I see that too, but only when using vga16fb. The problem, I think,
is that there aren't enough colours available to render the penguin
_and_ colourise the boot messages.

That's odd. Switching virtual consoles tends to get me back the usual
palette on tty1, though obviously that's not possible during the boot
sequence.
