Kernel: 2.3.16 with ide-scsi emulation

I can mount data cds, read from them. Haven't tried a cd write yet.
Audio cd players produce the following:

Sep 5 13:17:24 rd kernel: cdrom: pid 794 is buggy!
Sep 5 13:17:24 rd kernel: cdrom: open failed.

>From workbone cd player:

/dev/cdrom: Wrong medium type

Its an audio CD. (Yngwie Malmsteens Seventh Sign)
I've tried 10 different audio CDs, all return same errors.
I've tried unloading/reloading all the scsi and cdrom modules,
same errors.

After unloading all relevant modules, I retry workbone, lsmod reports:

Module Size Used by
sr_mod 16392 0 (autoclean) (unused)
cdrom 23904 0 (autoclean) [sr_mod]

ardy@rd:tty2:/dev#ls -l cdrom
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 4 Sep 5 12:52 cdrom -> scd0

I enabled debug and it reports:

What is this "wrong media type" for audio cds?
This setup works fine under 2.2.x.
What could I be missing?
