ppp & 2.3.16

ppp works fine with 2.3.6. When I compiled 2.3.16, ppp tells me the
kernel isn't compiled with ppp. I copied over the .config file from 2.3.6
and ran make oldconfig. I said YES to the option of using ppp and async
ppp. Any suggestions?
