Problem: USB implemeted in kernel, but doesnt support my printer

Im sorry, I could not give you the output from ver_linux, AS THIS IS NOT
DISTRIBUTED IN 2.3.21!

Other vital info:

kernel is selfcompiled with standard options from the dist. plus: -O3
-DCPU=686 -D__SMP__ is am allready on a smp box when I compiled it.

My libs are quite fucked up, because I have been using RPM and redhat -
Im done with that dist!

Machine is:

vendor_id : GenuineIntel
cpu family : 6
model : 5
model name : Pentium II (Deschutes)
stepping : 2
cpu MHz : 350.799293
cache size : 512 KB

flags : fpu vme de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 apic sep mtrr pge mca cmov
pat pse36 mmx osfxsr
bogomips : 349.80

(two of those) and 128 MB ram. Im running initios scsi card, and a
boomerang net card.

Other thing is: I tried to compile the latest gcc, and it fails due to a
problem with xgcc (maybe its a hint, I dont know...)

The printer is a Brother HL-1050 laser with 12 MB ram and it works
__very__ __very__ well with linux, gs and lpd, when I print over the lp.
I was just testing to see if the USB would make the data strem faster
(it should with the standard 12MB/s from the USB).

Normal programs compile without problems and only a few core dumps: I
had gdb core dumping (the dist. from RH) but I compiled my own, and it
is super stable (tested it with infinite loops, floating point far out
operations etc.).

The 2.3.21 kernel seems very stable on my platform (asus PII D board and
7ns ram).

Im not sure what is happening with the USB and linux ? are there two
projects running or whats going on ???

Kind regards

nino
