[2.3.23] SMP boot problem - more info

I compiled a lot of kernels this evening and narrowed it down to the
following: SMP 2.3.23pre4 and earlier boot on my ThinkPad 560X,
2.3.23pre5 and later don't. As I said above, UP works fine.

Any insights?
