OT: I am repeatedly losing my kernel IP routing cache.

I am running Kernel 2.3.26 on a Pentium machine.
It's a laptop with a Lucent PCMCIA modem card.
I am accessing the web via PPP.

One moment I'll be accessing the web and "route -C"
reports a number of routes. The next moment, by connections
lock up and "route -C" returns an empty list.
