I could say go run strace on it but...

AF_NETLINK which dumps the whole list of interface
data over a socket to the application. At least
that is what smart apps like ip use last time
I checked.

And since I deleted all of the netlink CONFIG_*
options, everyone's kernel has it enabled. There
really isn't any excuse to use netlink for network
configuration read/write in these kinds of tools.
