Thanks for your reply. This IS running on an SMP machine. Is there
anyway to prevent the reordering from happening?

Yes, reordering can happen if youre running on an SMP machine, and
to varying degrees depending on which kernel you are using..
(2.4, 2.5+NAPI, etc).
