The error count reported by ifconfig as carrier errors is the sum of several error counters AFAIR, so it could be something else than carrier errors. Try to increase the debug level of the driver so it logs TX errors.

Is there a way of reading the error counters of the struct net_device_stats from user space? Where would I find documentation of which errors should cause an update, and of which fields?
