My counts at least increment, both of them, but look at this:
(only the relevant lines)
$ ifconfig lo
RX packets:903 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0
TX packets:903 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0

$ ping localhost
PING lars (127.0.0.1): 56 data bytes
64 bytes from 127.0.0.1: icmp_seq=0 ttl=64 time=2.7 ms
64 bytes from 127.0.0.1: icmp_seq=1 ttl=64 time=2.1 ms
64 bytes from 127.0.0.1: icmp_seq=2 ttl=64 time=2.1 ms

--- lars ping statistics ---
3 packets transmitted, 3 packets received, 0% packet loss
round-trip min/avg/max = 2.1/2.3/2.7 ms

$ ifconfig lo
RX packets:909 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0
TX packets:909 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0

why does the count go up by 6 when i only let it ping 3 times?
