10baseT Networking troubles.

I have been have problems trying to network my 2 linux machines
together, I have been trying for about a month now, and I think it
might be a problem in the kernel, or something not updated on my box's.

Take a look, if you wouldn't mind.

Machine 1 ----/Hub/---- Machine 2

Both machines have a 3com 509b in them. The hub is also 3com.

Now heres the part I dont understand, When i try to ping from either
box:
ping 192.168.1.2
PING 192.168.1.2 (192.168.1.2): 56 data bytes
^C
--- 192.168.1.2 ping statistics ---
32 packets transmitted, 0 packets received, 100% packet loss

The packets go to the hub, becuase the packet light on the hub blinks,
and I think that the machines actually receive the packets because of
this:

Before the ping: (pay attention to the RX packets!)

ifconfig eth0
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:A0:24:12:B5:B3
inet addr:192.168.1.1 Bcast:192.168.1.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:10278 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:100
Interrupt:10 Base address:0x300

after the ping:

ifconfig eth0
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:A0:24:12:B5:B3
inet addr:192.168.1.1 Bcast:192.168.1.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:10310 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:100
Interrupt:10 Base address:0x300

Also I have one of those nifty network dock apps running in X, it also
says that ETH-0 is recieving packets. Why doesn't it acknowledge the
ping from the other machine.

If there is anything else you need to know about my setup, such as
routing tables or kernel version, please ask. I would very much like to
get this problem fixed.

Thank you very very much,
Andrew Brink
