Look at the order in which the daemons are started up in /etc/rc.d/rc5.d
(or whatever runlevel you are using). In my RedHat 6.0 installation the
"S" (start) number is listed early

S15netfs@, that is, after network, portmap and ypbind, but before any of
the others.

Daemons have to start in the right order to make use of services already
running. If they start out of order they may not start at all.
