I have a similar box (xu 5/133, SMP) that shows similar problems
because of broken e820 maps (predents there is memory between
640K->1MB, which is a damned lie...).
Try appending a "mem=16M" to the kernel command line, it does the
trick on my own box.
2.3.39 works fine here...
