You could also illustrate the problem which started this discussion,
using `(tp->ato << 1) >> 1' to clear the top bit of a `u32', by setting
INT_TYPE to a 32 bit wide unsigned type, the initial value to
`(INT_TYPE) 1 << 31', and BITS to 1.
