The following removes references to a variable $(CONFIGURE) used
in arch/{i386,sh,mips,arm}/boot/Makefile, and neither set nor used
anywhere else.
It also makes it so that the drivers/sound subdirectory is only accessed
when sound support is configured into the kernel, shaving a small bit
of time off the build for soundless machines.
It works for me.
Similar patches could also be applied to 2.2.15pre3. The drivers
Makefile is slightly different, and there is no arch/sh directory.
The arch/s390/boot/Makefile also has this problem.
