Sure, that shouldn't be a problem, certainly not if you mean an "X window".

I agree. However, the fact that the VT switch disables interrupts for
so long has the potential to cause all kinds of wierd effects. If you
used to be able to do this VT switch without problems, then its
clearly not the issue, but I just thought I should mention it. The
FIFO used by cdrecord makes it less of a real-time program than it
otherwise would be, but I know that VT switching can cause problems
for other real-time applications.
