Well, I can't comment on what some people have suggested might be the
problem, but I can provide some more test data.
Specifically, I've noticed the following interesting behavior: my system
seems much happier during and after a kernel compile. That is, kswapd was
much better behavied once I started a kernel compiling, and stayed
relatively happy once it was compiled. Before doing this, any intensive
disk IO (including just playing mp3s with x11amp) was choking my system.
This is using 2.3.99-pre6
