You noticed it wrong, I did not enabled it. :-)
Well, I tried 2.3.99-pre9-2 which is basically the same as
2.3.99-pre9-1 + latest IDE patch from May 14. It locked up
as well with the same stress test.
Yesterday I restricted my disk to UDMA(33) mode, at first by an older
IDE cable which the controller/BIOS recognized. This way,
it survived the stress test, I tried three times.
After that I put the UDMA cable back and I tried to set the drive
speed in the BIOS. It did not help because the hpt366 driver ignored
the setting. The real fix is the attached patch, it lists my drive in
the bad_ata66_4 list. The drive works happily in UDMA(44) mode and
survived the stress test, again three times.
