i don't recall *which* unix provides this functionality (solaris? irix?
...)
but it's out there -- someone has spliced it in as a fcntl().
fcntl(fd, FCNTL_DEALLOC_or_something, struct flock*);
uses a flock-style byte range specifier to punch a hole in the file.
It's cute.
