2.2.15/.16pre fails to boot

System reboots before kernel initialisation completed

[2.] Full description of the problem/report:

When I attempt to boot with 2.2.15 or 2.2.16pre5, the boot sequence
isn't completed. The boot messages begin but the reboot happens so
quickly that I can't even see which stage has been reached.

The latest stable RedHat kernel (2.2.14-12) boots with no problems.
