What I did:
create /etc/raidtab like this:

parity-algorithm left-symmetric

device /dev/hdg1
raid-disk 1
device /dev/hdi1
raid-disk 2
Then ran mkraid /dev/md0 and got:

This is with raidtools 0.90.990824.
