Thanks go to Chad Schwarz who pointed out
that incorrectly specifying the CPU type bit
him in a similar fashion.
After carefully checking the
make xconfig screen for CPU choice,
I realized that the part that looked like a
header line was actually
a variable portion for CPU type spec
and I was using the PenPro setting
on my AMD K6-III board.
After I fixied it, the system booted sort of.
I am upgrading the relevant drivers from
various web sites to use the latest ones
known to work with 2.4.0.
