Which kernel to use?

I'm trying to get a kernel w/ USB support up and running on my
surfing/email box, and I was wondering which kernel you guys recommend.
I don't need super-stability (nothing important on this computer), but
not crashing all of the time would also be nice. Should I use a
2.3.99pre-*, 2.4.0-test1, or something else?

Any help would be appreciated.
