Well, now I just went and tested other 2.2 kernels and .15 and .14 have
this slowness. It has to be something very strange and confined to my
machine? Even the orignal redhat kernel (labled as 2.2.12-20) has the
problem. But in 2.3.x everything is fine.... I am at a loss.
