error compiling e2fsprogs under kernel 2.4 test3-pre4

Hi !
I have had some errors compiling e2fsprogs with gcc-2.9.5...
The problem seems to be <linux/string.h>
I tried the original tytso 1.18 version and also the patched version
distributed with SuSE 6.4.
Please see attached patches and output of make.
