Chris Kloiber pointed out that the ".config" file, if imported from an
earlier kernel (2.3.99), could leave out the IDE drivers: with a fresh
configuration, 2.4.0 boots fine.

Haven't tried sound yet (and I am using the soundcore/es1730 driver/kde.).
I'll report if anything goes wrong.

I wouldn't have thought so, and no other module I could find uses this fn.
