Michael,

devfs has been added to the kernel quite a long time ago. At compile time
you can either:

a) disable it completely (not recommended, it is a nice thing)

b) disable mounting it under /dev by defauly (recommended for beginners
until they get used to it and then they will like it and enable "mount
/dev on boot" :)

Btw, it is all well-documented under Documentation/filesystems/devfs/
