The userspace NFSD is slow. There are also a few issues like filehandles
changing on cross directory rename(). The kernel NFS daemon is better.

Will definitely help. I'd upgrade to the latest 2.2.17prepatch and apply the
NFS patches. See http://nfs.sourceforge.net/
